Former nuclear site turned into 800 MWh giant battery to power 100,000 homes

EnBW plans to convert a former nuclear power site in Philippsburg into one of Germany's largest battery storage systems. The facility will have a capacity of 400 MW and 800 MWh, enough to power approximately 100,000 homes, and will help stabilize the grid by storing surplus renewable energy. The project is strategically located near a large substation connected to the Ultranet power line. Despite clear plans, the project still awaits final investment decisions and a building permit, aiming for operation by mid-2027.

EnBW prévoit de transformer un ancien site nucléaire à Philippsburg en l'un des plus grands systèmes de stockage de batterie en Allemagne. La capacité de 400 MW et 800 MWh suffira à alimenter environ 100 000 foyers et contribuera à stabiliser le réseau en stockant l'énergie renouvelable excédentaire. Le projet est stratégiquement situé à proximité d'une grande sous-station connectée à la ligne Ultranet. Bien que les plans soient précis, le projet nécessite encore des décisions d'investissement et un permis de construire et vise une mise en service d'ici mi-2027.
